April 5, 2024
Spring is such a pretty time of year. Warm weather and sunshine are encouraging more and more spring blossoms and each day there are noticeable changes as new growth emerges. Some great places to enjoy the blossoms in Coquitlam are Como Lake, Town Centre Park, Percy Perry Stadium, Lansdowne Dr. and Runnel Dr. To enjoy more flowering trees throughout the lower mainland check out this fun blossom finder from the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival.
Applications are open for Neighbourhood Small Grants of up to $500 for projects that connect people socially or involve sharing skills or talents with each other. Ideas could include social gatherings, improvement projects or workshops to share skills. Coquitlam residents of all ages have until April 18 to apply. The aim is to make Coquitlam’s neighborhood’s places where people know and help each other, celebrate together and work as a team to make their community a better place to live.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT DOGWOOD
Spring programs begin next week, and we're excited to introduce some new visual arts programs. Our art classes are designed to promote artistic knowledge and skill development by offering instruction and ample opportunities to practice various artistic techniques. They serve as a wonderful avenue for fostering creativity, personal growth, cultural understanding, and overall well-being. Here are some classes we encourage you to try: Drawing with Charcoal and Pastels, Drawing with a theme of Figures, Introduction to Macrame, Introduction to Acrylic Painting and Introduction to Procreate and Acrylic Painting using Bold Bright Colours.
Dance classes offer an avenue for knowledge and skill development by providing structured instruction and ample practice opportunities. They contribute to physical, mental, and emotional well-being by engaging participants in movement to music within a relaxed and welcoming environment. It's never too late to try out a variety of dance styles, including Argentine Tango, Ballet, Bellydance, Hip Hop, new Saturday Line Dance, and Saturday Tango workshop.
WHAT'S HAPPENING AT GLEN PINE
The new season of programs starts up next week. Here are some newly added programs that are not in the current Seniors Guide that we would love to feature including Floor Curling Basics which allows you to enjoy this popular ice sport on a flat surface not in a rink and several learn to play games such as Dungeons and Dragons, Canasta, 500 and Cribbage.
We have also an updated schedule for the popular Themed Music Dance Workshops that will be moving from Mondays (last session on April 8) to Wednesdays, 4 – 5 p.m. starting April 10. The full list of themes are available and sign up for as many themes as you wish. No dance experience or partner required just a love for different music genres. We have also shifted the time for the Tai Chi Drop-in on Wednesdays to 7:45 p.m. giving everyone a chance to have dinner and then come out for a relaxing session before turning in for the night.
Sell or shop for gently used clothes, housewares, books, toys or other pre-loved treasures at the Spring Clean-Up Sale in Spirit Square outside Glen Pine Pavilion, across from City Hall. Coquitlam's City Wide Garage Sale is also on the same weekend—participate or shop around.
Please do not delay in signing up for classes as sometimes many great programs end up cancelled because everyone waits until the last minute to complete registration.

COMMUNITY SERVICES
KAIROS Blanket Exercise
The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is an experiential workshop that explores the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. The workshop helps people to understand how the colonization of this land impacts those who were here long before settlers arrived. It engages people’s minds and hearts in understanding why the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples is often broken and how we can take action together.
This program is an experiential workshop and does not involve crafting. It may involve some discomfort, including remembering and discussing unpleasant events and experiences. The process may unintentionally evoke uncomfortable feelings and emotions. Please note that much of this session will involve standing in a circle, within proximity to others. If you require any accommodation or require more information on this program, please contact Community Services at communityservices@coquitlam.ca or 604-927-6076.
June 14, 2024 | 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. | Glen Pine Pavilion | $50.00
