Heritage Planning

The City is developing an overarching and comprehensive Heritage Management Strategy framework to guide the assessment, preservation, and enhancement of Coquitlam’s rich heritage resources, both built and natural, for the enlightened enjoyment of future generations. The Strategy will help refine the City’s vision for heritage conservation and identify the tools available to realize that vision.

Preserving Coquitlam’s Heritage

The notion of heritage extends beyond individual buildings, to include overall streetscapes and neighbourhoods. For example, the Riverview Hospital site has been recently added to Canada’s Register of Historic Places.

Maintaining and caring for our City’s heritage brings many benefits:

  • Enhancing the community’s distinct identity and pride through the preservation of the roots of its ancestors
  • Providing a sense of continuity between the past, present and future
  • Demonstrating a commitment to the general principle of sustainability
