The Community Planning Division works with the community to guide future growth—developing, implementing and updating policies relating to the overarching vision for how the City will grow and change over time. This includes land use planning and the management of growth and development through the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Zoning Bylaw, as well as long-range planning initiatives such as child care, heritage, homelessness, affordable housing, and multiculturalism. Community plans and strategies are living documents that can be amended from time to time by Council, to serve changing community and development needs.
Official Community Plan (OCP)
The Official Community Plan describes the long-term vision for the City, identifying where, when and how the City will grow. The vision, goals, objectives and policies in the OCP guide decision-making around planning and land use management.
Community Social Development
Community Social Development includes policy work related to child care, homelessness, and multiculturalism.
Housing
Safe, adequate, and affordable housing is an important building block of complete and inclusive communities. The City of Coquitlam, working together with its housing partners, promotes housing affordability and collaborates to address needs across the housing continuum.
Heritage Planning
Coquitlam enjoys a rich heritage, evident in many features throughout the City. Heritage planning includes a notion of heritage that extends beyond individual buildings, affecting overall streetscapes and neighbourhoods.
Zoning
The Zoning Bylaw regulates how land, buildings and other structures may be used and developed. The Zoning Bylaw is a tool to implement the vision identified in the Official Community Plan.
All land in the City is assigned a zone. All building and development must comply with the regulations in the assigned zone.
