About the Coquitlam Animal Shelter

The Coquitlam Animal Shelter has been operating in the City since 2003. We receive and care for all stray animals found in the cities of Coquitlam, Port Moody and Port Coquitlam. Animal Shelter staff work to reunite pets with their owners as quickly as possible, and to make their stay as comfortable as possible while they are in our care.

All animals are held for seven days to allow owners time to find their missing pet. If after seven days no owner has been located, the animal will go up for adoption. Animals are assessed medically and behaviorally before adoption; they are then posted on our Animals for Adoption page.

Adoptable Pets

The most common animals at the shelter are dogs and cats, however we also have rabbits, and occasionally other small animals and birds.

You can find our adoptable animals here

If you have seen a pet that you are interested in adopting, please fill out an application form.  Once you have completed the application, please return it to us by email

Animal Shelter Services

Licence Your Dog

A dog licence is the best way to be reunited with your dog should they go missing, by providing an easy-to-identify dog tag and registration with the Coquitlam Animal Shelter. All dogs over the age of six months must be licenced. You can purchase a licence at the Animal Shelter,  City Hall or online.

Dog licence fees fund the Coquitlam Animal Shelter which protects and finds new homes for homeless animals in the community.

City Kennels

The Coquitlam Animal Shelter hosts a dog boarding facility–a safe place for your dog to stay while you are away. Visit City Kennels for more information.

Pet Pantry

In the spirit of giving, the Coquitlam Animal Shelter operates the Pet Pantry. The Shelter supports keeping pets and their families together. Through the generosity of the community, we can offer excess food to those in need. Please contact the Animal Shelter to learn more and arrange a time to pick up food.
