Lougheed Highway Roadwork Improvement Projects Begin May 8

Scott Creek Bridge along Lougheed Highway

COQUITLAM, B.C., May 3, 2023 – As part of Coquitlam’s annual capital program, the City is moving forward with a number of improvement projects along Lougheed Highway in 2023.

These transportation and infrastructure projects support safety, asset management and economic development by improving the long-term movement of people and goods in, around and through Coquitlam. Traffic will be impacted during construction, though crews will make every effort to keep people and goods moving as quickly as possible.

Motorists are encouraged to consider alternative routes and seek updates from navigation apps, such as Google Maps or Waze, or local traffic reports to plan the best route to their destination.

Scott Creek Bridge Improvements

Starting May 8, crews will begin rehabilitation work on the Lougheed Highway bridge over Scott Creek (between Barnet Highway and Dewdney Trunk Road).

Traffic will be limited to a single lane in each direction 24 hours a day for the duration of the project, which is anticipated to take approximately six months.

The bridge deck is nearly 50 years old and the concrete is showing signs of wearing and corrosion. Work will ensure that the Lougheed Highway bridge over Scott Creek continues to safely serve this major arterial route for decades to come.

Safety Improvements

Over the summer months, construction will also take place to bring improvements on Lougheed Highway from Pitt River Road to south of Colony Farm Road. This work will take approximately three months to complete and will take place at night to minimize traffic impacts.

Improvements will include:

  • New streetlights
  • New pavement markers
  • New signage
  • Traffic signal upgrades
  • Addition of another westbound lane south of Colony Farm Road
  • Repaving

New Multi-Use Pathway for Greater Mobility

The third road improvement project will bring a new multi-use pathway along the north side of Lougheed Highway from Pinetree Way to Westwood Street.

This new section of infrastructure will provide better connectivity to other multi-use pathways in the area, and improve pedestrian, cycling and micro-mobility (e.g. scooters and e-scooters) accessibility. Minor traffic impacts are expected including the closure of the westbound curb lane during active construction and detours at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Ponderosa Street.

Road work crews and equipment will affect traffic. The City will be sharing updates with local traffic reporters, and also encourages drivers to use the following to
