COQUITLAM, B.C., February 4, 2026 – A group of local dog walkers has donated a handcrafted bench and dog library in Mundy Park, adding a new gathering space for dogs and their owners. The donation reflects a strong sense of connection among regular visitors to the park.

Installed near a common meeting area, the bench and dog library were created through the City of Coquitlam’s Parks Gift Program. They add to the park’s existing amenities and support everyday use, connection and enjoyment of Mundy Park.

Community-Focused Design Uses Fallen Mundy Park Cedar

City Parks carpenters constructed the bench using wood repurposed from a Western Red Cedar tree that fell in Mundy Park. The tree was salvaged from a nearby trail, then milled and dried for a year before being used for the bench. Wood from the same cedar also featured in the accompanying dog library, reinforcing the connection between the materials and the park itself.

The bench was donated in memory of Dean Kasdorf, a cherished member of the park’s dog walking community whose presence reflected the welcoming and social nature of Mundy Park. The dog library offers visitors a place to share gently used pet items such as toys and accessories, supporting sustainability and sharing while strengthening community connection.

Parks Gift Program Creates Opportunities to Give Back

The Parks Gift Program allows residents, businesses and community groups to donate amenities such as benches, trees, dog libraries and other enhancements that add value to Coquitlam’s parks and public spaces. Learn more at coquitlam.ca/DonationAandGifting

We acknowledge with gratitude and respect that the name Coquitlam was derived from the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ (HUN-kuh-MEE-num) word kʷikʷəƛ̓əm (kwee-KWET-lum) meaning “Red Fish Up the River”. The City is honoured to be located on the kʷikʷəƛ̓əm traditional and ancestral lands, including those parts that were historically shared with the q̓ic̓əy̓ (kat-zee), and other Coast Salish Peoples.
