Statement of Significance
Installed to commemorate the Coquitlam Legion’s Centenary, these poppies inspire reflection on sacrifice, memory, and gratitude, marking the significance of the Legion in the community. In his poem In Flanders Fields, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae reflects on the resurgence of life in the war-ravaged landscape, symbolized by the emergence of poppies. These flowers, with their vibrant red hue, honour the sacrifices of fallen soldiers while representing renewal and hope. Centenary Poppies seeks to capture the multifaceted symbolism of the poppy in the context of remembrance. By integrating light posts as the stems, the installation evokes the natural elegance and rapid growth of these iconic flowers.
About the Artist
Linfeng Zhou is a Vancouver-based artist/designer with roots in Southwestern China, and degrees in architecture and industrial design. He straddles industries and cultures in search of the extraordinary in ordinary life. His work seeks to inspire wonder by creating objects and spaces that elevate their original contexts and foster positive interactions between communities, ultimately connecting us more deeply to our environments and the present moment.
