Electrical Vehicle Charging

As part of its climate action commitments, Coquitlam supports electrical vehicle (EV) use with a growing network of public EV charging stations.

The City installed its first dual-port user-pay public station in the parking lot at City Hall in 2015, followed by another public station at the Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex in 2019.

With the support of funding through the federal Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, the City has installed EV charging stations at four new locations serving an additional 10 parking stalls, bringing the total number of City-owned, user-pay, Level 2, electric vehicle locations to 10 and serving a total of 25 parking stalls. In spring 2020, the City installed the first set of ports through the federal government program .

EV charging infrastructure has been required for new multi-family developments in Coquitlam since 2018. The City also has a growing “Ecofleet” of electric, hybrid and compact fuel-efficient vehicles.

EV Charging Station and Plug-in Locations

All public EV charging stations can be found at plugshare.com.

Level 1

Coquitlam has six Level 1 EV charging outlets at two locations serving up to six vehicles as part of an initial pilot project:

  • three units within the City Hall visitor parkade (3000 Guildford Way - opposite existing Level 2 chargers), and
  • three at the Coquitlam City Centre Public Library (1169 Pinetree Way - off the initial driving aisle).

Users will be required to bring their own charging cable, but during the pilot project there will be no user cost for using the Level 1 charging outlets. However, the City will be using this period to observe the usage to determine future user fees. Level 1 charging outlets are meant for long-duration charging including, 4+ hours, or overnight charging.

At the library location, visitors will be permitted to charge their vehicle up to 4-hours, in-line with the current parking restrictions, which includes no overnight parking.

For City Hall, the visitor portion of the parkade is open 24 hours allowing overnight charging between Monday and Friday and all day on Saturday and Sunday. The standard 2-hour parking restrictions will continue to be enforced between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Level 2

The public stations are intended for active charging, not long-term parking. To cover costs and promote turnover to serve more EV drivers, the City stations charge $1 an hour for the first two hours and increases to $5 hour after that (motorists parking for more than 2 hours may receive a parking ticket). The cost for the EV Charging is in addition to any pay parking fees associated with the parking facility.
